Two Harveys locations set to shut in mid-May

Two Harveys Supermarket locations in Jacksonville are scheduled to close in mid-May, as The Winn-Dixie Company LLC restructures its local store portfolio and consolidates operations under the Winn-Dixie name.

The stores identified for closure are at 49 Arlington Road S. in the Arlington area and 201 W. 48th St. in the North Shore area north of Brentwood. Company communications to local media and officials described the decision as part of broader efforts to support long-term business sustainability and ongoing transformation.

Employee transition and severance outlined

The company said associates who want to remain with Winn-Dixie may apply for open positions at nearby locations. It also said that eligible associates who do not transfer will receive severance. The company did not provide store-by-store staffing figures or specify how many employees could be absorbed by other locations.

Store histories and nearby alternatives

The 201 W. 48th St. store is a 43,149-square-foot supermarket built in 1983. The site has operated under multiple banners over time, including conversion from SaveRite to Winn-Dixie in 2011 and later to Harveys in 2016. The location is roughly a mile from another Winn-Dixie store at Gateway Town Center along Norwood Avenue.

The 49 Arlington Road S. store, built in 1988, also has cycled banners, operating as a Winn-Dixie before it was converted into a Harveys in 2017. The 46,222-square-foot store sits south of Atlantic Boulevard and is several miles from the Winn-Dixie at 999 University Blvd. N. in the College Park area.

Two Jacksonville Harveys stores slated for conversion to Winn-Dixie

In addition to closures, the company is moving forward with converting two other Jacksonville Harveys locations to the Winn-Dixie banner:

  • 5909 University Blvd. W. (Santa Monica Center, Englewood area)
  • 5250 Moncrief Road W. (Brown Plaza area, Northwest Jacksonville)

The company has said the Jacksonville conversions are part of a broader plan involving seven Harveys locations in Florida and southern Georgia. Timing for the banner changes at individual stores has not been announced.

Local access concerns raised as grocery landscape shifts

A Jacksonville City Council member whose district includes the Arlington store raised concerns that the closure could reduce convenient grocery access for nearby neighborhoods.

The closures and conversions come amid continued realignment in the regional grocery market following ownership changes involving Southeastern Grocers’ legacy store network and ongoing competitive expansion by discount grocers in Florida. In Jacksonville, residents have seen a mix of store conversions, brand consolidation, and selective closures as operators recalibrate footprints and formats.
