Sunshine and Near-Record Warmth

Jacksonville residents are waking up to a deceptive bit of paradise this Sunday, January 25, 2026. While the calendar says mid-winter, the thermometer will be shouting mid-summer for the first half of the day. Our region is positioned for near-record warmth today, with morning temperatures rising quickly from the 50s into the upper 70s and low 80s by the afternoon. With offshore winds picking up and becoming breezy, the high for today is forecasted to hit 81 degrees, narrowly trailing the all-time record of 83 degrees set in 2023. This is the perfect time for outdoor activities, but the Jacksonville Weather Authority warns that this tropical interlude is merely the prologue to a dramatic and dangerous shift.

Evening Storm Alert: Severe Wind and Lightning

The weather will take a turbulent turn as a strong cold front approaches from the west. Meteorologists have highlighted a specific window for potential severe weather between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM tonight. As a line of thunderstorms pushes through Northeast Florida, the overall intensity may weaken slightly as it moves east, but significant threats remain.

Residents should be prepared for the following conditions during the evening commute and dinner hours:

  • Embedded thunderstorms capable of producing frequent lightning.
  • Potential severe wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph.
  • Isolated heavy downpours and the possibility of light hail.
  • A rapid drop in temperature as the rain moves toward the coast.

It is critical to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings this evening, as the transition from a warm, breezy afternoon to a stormy night will be swift and impactful.

The Big Freeze: Preparing for the Arctic Blast

While the much-needed rain is expected to clear the area before sunrise on Monday, it leaves the door wide open for a massive Arctic Blast. Temperatures will crater starting Monday night, ending our brief flirtation with spring-like weather. The City of Jacksonville has already activated its Warming Center Contingency Plan, and a Freeze Watch is in effect beginning late Monday night. With morning temperatures later this week expected to drop into the mid-20s inland and wind chills potentially falling into the teens, today is the final day to prepare. Local officials urge everyone to protect the five P’s: People, Pets, Plants, and Pipes, and to practice strict fire safety if using space heaters this week.
