Emergency Warming Center Activation

The City of Jacksonville has officially activated its Warming Center Contingency Plan effective Monday, January 26, 2026. This activation follows a sharp drop in temperatures, with local weather forecasts predicting freezing conditions and wind chills in the 20s. To ensure the safety of all residents, an overnight warming center will operate nightly from 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. through Friday morning, January 30.

  • Location: The Legends Center, 5130 Soutel Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32208.
  • Transportation: The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is providing free transportation to and from the center for vulnerable residents from bus stops throughout Duval County.
  • Preparation: Residents are encouraged to bring their own bedding (air mattresses, blankets, pillows), medications, and personal hygiene items. Only service animals are permitted on site.

City officials urge the public to follow the "Five P’s" of cold weather safety: protect People, protect Pets, protect Plants, protect Pipes, and Practice fire safety when using space heaters.

Public Health Alert: Measles and Respiratory Illness

The Florida Department of Health in Duval County (DOH-Duval) and local health systems have confirmed two pediatric cases of measles within the same household in Jacksonville. Measles is highly contagious and poses a significant risk to unvaccinated individuals, particularly children under five years of age. In response, health officials have expanded vaccination access for MMR, influenza, and hepatitis A.

Residents may receive immunizations Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the following DOH-Duval locations:

  • 515 West 6th Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206
  • 3225 University Boulevard South, Jacksonville, FL 32216

Additionally, medical providers have noted a surge in "Super Flu" cases—a mutated strain of influenza spreading aggressively across the First Coast. Residents experiencing severe fever or persistent coughing should contact their healthcare provider before visiting a clinic to prevent further exposure.
