Man shot after following hit-and-run driver from St. Johns Bluff crash in Jacksonville, police say

Shooting reported after traffic collision on St. Johns Bluff Road
A man was hospitalized Tuesday night after being shot in the abdomen following a hit-and-run crash on St. Johns Bluff Road in Jacksonville, according to police accounts of the incident.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said officers responded at about 9 p.m. to a report of a shooting in the 1700 block of St. Johns Bluff Road. When officers arrived, they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital with injuries described by police as non-life-threatening.
Sequence of events under investigation
Investigators said the shooting stemmed from a traffic crash in which the other driver left the scene. Police said the victim then followed the hit-and-run driver. At some point after the vehicles traveled from the original crash location, the suspect stopped and fired at the victim’s vehicle before fleeing, investigators said.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victim or the suspected shooter. No arrests had been announced in initial reports, and police indicated the suspect drove away after the shooting.
Search for video and witnesses underway
Police said crime scene detectives processed the area and investigators canvassed nearby locations for surveillance footage and witnesses. In incidents involving moving vehicles, the availability of video from businesses, residences, or traffic cameras can become central to establishing vehicle descriptions, travel routes, and the timing of key events.
Context: recurring violence tied to roadway conflicts in the area
The St. Johns Bluff Road and Atlantic Boulevard corridor has been the site of several high-profile shootings in recent years, including incidents police described as road-rage related and other shootings near intersections and businesses in the same general area. Those cases have included scenarios where shots were fired between vehicles and where victims were found with gunshot wounds near major roadways.
While investigators have not labeled the Tuesday night shooting a road-rage case, police accounts indicate it followed a driver pursuit after a crash—an escalation pattern that law enforcement agencies routinely warn can increase the risk of violence and further collisions.
