Jacksonville Traffic and Commute Update: Thursday, January 22, 2026

Jacksonville commuters are facing significant activity across the city's major arteries this morning. As of today, January 22, 2026, several long-term infrastructure projects continue to shape travel patterns, particularly for those moving through the urban core and Westside. While no emergency closures have been reported this morning, the cumulative effect of ongoing widening projects is leading to predictable slow-downs during the peak rush hour.

I-95 and I-10 Construction Hotspots

The largest impact remains the $247 million I-95 widening project extending from south of Emerson Street to Atlantic Boulevard. Crews are actively working on reconstructing the interstate to provide a total of five travel lanes in each direction. Commuters should be aware of shifted lanes and narrowed shoulders near the San Diego Road and Emerson Street bridges. Reconfiguration of the Emerson Street interchange into a median U-turn (MUT) format is still in progress, causing intermittent delays for those exiting toward San Marco.

On the Westside, the I-10 widening project is entering its final stages. This initiative, which expands the highway to 10 lanes between I-295 and I-95, is nearing full completion. However, localized detours and overnight shifts near McDuff Avenue continue to affect early-morning traffic as final resurfacing and signage updates are implemented.

Downtown and Local Roadworks

  • Beaver Street: Following yesterday's groundbreaking for the Pearl Square retail corridor, motorists should expect increased construction activity along Beaver Street. The project includes streetscape upgrades, new sidewalks, and bike lane installations near N. Pearl Street.
  • San Jose Boulevard: Resurfacing and drainage improvements are winding down. While work is scheduled to conclude in early 2026, lane closures are restricted between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. to keep the daytime commute smooth.
  • First Coast Expressway: Work on the segment connecting I-95 to east of CR 2209 has officially moved into the construction phase, impacting southern Duval and northern St. Johns county lines.

Public Transit: JTA's Future-Forward Updates

Following yesterday's "State of the Authority" address, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is moving forward with its 25-year vision plan. Commuters in the Urban Core will notice continued testing and implementation of the Bay Street Innovation Corridor. This first phase of the U2C (Ultimate Urban Circulator) introduces autonomous vehicles into mixed traffic along Bay Street from Pearl Street to EverBank Stadium. Residents are encouraged to stay alert for these AVs as they navigate curbside lanes.

Commuters are advised to allow an extra 10-15 minutes for travel through the San Marco and Emerson corridors and to monitor real-time overhead signage for the latest detour alerts.
