Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in Jacksonville can expect a standard morning rush this Thursday, February 19, 2026. While major highways are currently clear of unplanned incidents, several long-term construction projects and recent transit changes are in effect. Drivers should remain alert for shifting traffic patterns near the city's major interchanges, particularly on the Westside and near the downtown corridor.

Ongoing I-10 Widening and Nightly Detours

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) continues its massive $174.5 million widening project on Interstate 10, stretching from I-295 to I-95. As the project moves toward its anticipated completion later this year, motorists should be prepared for nightly lane closures. Work typically occurs from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., meaning those finishing late shifts tonight or starting early tomorrow morning will encounter congestion between Hammond Boulevard and Stockton Street.

Specifically, crews are focusing on bridge widening and the installation of barrier walls. Temporary detours remain a possibility at the McDuff Avenue and Irene Street interchanges during these overnight windows. Drivers are encouraged to use I-295 as an alternate route to avoid the construction zone during late-night hours.

Local Roadworks: Beach and Atlantic Boulevard

Safety improvements are currently active on two of Jacksonville’s busiest arteries. FDOT has begun a series of median modifications on Beach Boulevard (SR 212) and Atlantic Boulevard (SR 10). These projects aim to reduce accidents by limiting dangerous left turns at several intersections. Commuters should watch for equipment and workers near the following locations:

  • Beach Boulevard: Work is concentrated near Walker Lane, Everlee Road, and the Jacksonville Humane Society.
  • Atlantic Boulevard: Median upgrades are underway at Spring Forest Avenue and Century Street.

While most work is scheduled to minimize daytime disruptions, occasional lane shifts may occur during off-peak hours.

JTA Public Transit Updates and Fare Pilot

For those utilizing public transportation, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is currently in the second month of its six-month fare modification pilot program. Fixed-route bus fares have been significantly reduced to $1.00, while Connexion paratransit services are now $2.00. However, riders using the premium Connexion Plus service should be aware of the recently implemented fee structure, which now starts at $10.00 for the first eight miles.

Additionally, schedule adjustments remain in place for several key routes to improve on-time performance. Riders on the following routes should double-check their schedules at the Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center (JRTC):

  • Route 8
  • Route 10
  • Route 18
  • Route 28

Overpass Maintenance on I-95 and MLK Jr. Parkway

Pedestrian overpass rehabilitation continues at three locations: I-95 at Glencarin Street, MLK Jr. Parkway north of Eighth Street, and Atlantic Boulevard east of I-95. Cleaning and structural steel painting are performed intermittently at night. While these bridges are closed to pedestrians during work hours, motorists below may experience brief lane closures between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. as safety precautions are taken.
