Morning Commute Overview

For Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Jacksonville commuters can expect a relatively typical morning peak, though heavy volume is anticipated on major arteries. As part of Florida’s "Move Over Month," the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) reminds drivers that the law now covers all vehicles parked on the shoulder with hazard lights or flares. Expect increased law enforcement presence monitoring safety compliance on I-95 and I-295 today.

Major Interstate Roadworks: I-10 and I-95

Construction remains the primary factor for transit times across the First Coast. The multi-year widening of I-10 between I-295 and I-95 continues to progress. While major daytime lanes remain open to accommodate the morning rush, drivers should be aware of recent traffic shifts near the McDuff Avenue and Stockton Street interchanges. This $174.5 million project is in its final stages, aiming to expand the corridor to up to ten lanes by later this year.

On the Southside, the reconstruction of I-95 from Emerson Street to Atlantic Boulevard is active. While FDOT regulations prohibit single-lane closures during peak hours (6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday), commuters should remain alert for narrowed lanes and construction vehicles entering the flow of traffic near the San Diego Road overpass. Work in this sector is part of a larger safety and capacity upgrade scheduled to run through Spring 2028.

Localized Impacts and Detours

  • San Marco Boulevard: Significant drainage improvements are ongoing. Commuters should prepare for detours around the LaSalle Street area, where deep trench installations for the pump station project are nearing completion.
  • Atlantic Boulevard: Nighttime lane closures are scheduled from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. near the pedestrian bridge between Holmesdale Road and Stevens Street for essential overpass repairs. Drivers heading toward the beaches later this evening should plan for minor delays.
  • I-95/I-295 North Interchange: Bridge construction operations on the Northside may cause intermittent congestion near the interchange.

JTA Public Transport and Transit Alerts

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has issued a reminder that the next round of service enhancements is scheduled to begin this coming Monday, January 26, 2026. This will include schedule and running time adjustments for Routes 8, 10, 18, and 28. Riders are encouraged to pick up updated schedules at the JRTC at LaVilla today to prepare for next week’s changes.

Furthermore, paratransit users should take note that JTA’s Connexion services will begin a new efficiency-focused combination program starting February 1. While services are not being discontinued, wait times for pickups may be adjusted as the authority implements its six-month fare reduction initiative.
