Sunday Traffic Overview

Jacksonville drivers can expect a relatively smooth commute throughout the morning and early afternoon of Sunday, January 25, 2026. However, conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly by this evening as a strong cold front approaches the region. The National Weather Service and local authorities have issued alerts for isolated severe thunderstorms between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., with wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Commuters are advised to complete their travel early to avoid the onset of heavy rain and potential lightning hazards.

Major Roadwork and Ramp Closures

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) continues its extensive I-10 widening project from I-295 to I-95, which will trigger several overnight closures starting at 10 p.m. tonight. Key areas of concern include:

  • I-10 Westbound: The off-ramp to U.S. 17 (Roosevelt Boulevard) will be closed tonight. Drivers should use McDuff Avenue as an alternate route.
  • I-10 On-Ramps: Both the Irene Street on-ramp to I-10 West and the McDuff Avenue on-ramp to I-10 East are scheduled for closure. Detours will be in place via Edison Avenue and Stockton Street.
  • I-295 Interchange: Construction at Exit 19 (Normandy Boulevard) has resulted in the closure of the entry ramp to I-295 clockwise.
  • MLK Jr. Parkway: Ongoing ramp construction and a new road layout are in effect for the exit from I-95 Southbound to MLK Jr. Parkway Southbound.

Downtown and Local Delays

In addition to highway projects, several local streets remain closed for construction and layout adjustments. Independent Drive Westbound is closed from South Main Street to Laura Street, and Duval Street Eastbound is restricted from Palmetto Street to A. Philip Randolph Boulevard. In the San Marco area, Riviera Street is closed both ways between San Marco Boulevard and River Road due to weight limit enforcements and ongoing utility work. Residents in Riverside should also note the closure of Old Roosevelt Boulevard.

Public Transport and JTA Alerts

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has announced that significant service enhancements will take effect tomorrow, Monday, January 26. This includes schedule and running time adjustments for Routes 8, 10, 18, and 28. For tonight, JTA is preparing to support the city's warming center contingency plan. As temperatures are expected to drop following the evening's storms, free transportation will be provided to the Legends Center for vulnerable residents starting Monday morning.
