Downtown Road Closures for MLK Day Celebrations

Jacksonville commuters and residents should prepare for significant traffic disruptions in the downtown core today, Monday, January 19, 2026, as the city celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The 45th Annual MLK Holiday Grand Parade is the primary cause of localized congestion. The procession is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM, but staging and security measures will affect traffic flow much earlier in the morning.

The parade route begins at Lot E near EverBank Stadium, traveling west along Bay Street before turning north onto Market Street. Drivers can expect total closures of Bay Street between the stadium and the downtown core starting as early as 9:00 AM. Additional closures are anticipated on Water Street, Laura Street, and Adams Street to accommodate the 1.5-mile route. Police will be on-site to direct traffic, but those not attending festivities are strongly advised to use the I-95 Overland Bridge or the Acosta Bridge to bypass the city center entirely.

JTA Service Changes and Route Detours

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has implemented modified schedules and detours for the holiday. All fixed-route bus services are operating on a Saturday schedule today. Commuters should be aware that the Skyway and NAVI autonomous shuttles will have limited operating hours from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Specifically, the NAVI route is being modified to run between Pearl Street and Newnan Street to avoid parade barriers.

Significant detours are in effect for several major bus lines from 7:00 AM until approximately 1:30 PM. Impacted routes include Route 1, Route 3, and Route 11. Passengers normally using stops along the parade route, such as those near the corner of Adams and Newnan, should check the JTA mobile app for alternate boarding locations. The JRTC Ticket Center remains open until 2:00 PM for those requiring assistance with holiday passes.

Ongoing Construction and Highway Alerts

While holiday traffic is typically lighter on major interstates, several long-term FDOT projects continue to impact drive times. On the I-295 West Beltway, the Buckman Bridge finger joint replacement project remains active. Although double lane closures are prohibited during the day, the posted speed limit has been reduced to 55 MPH through the work zone. Drivers should expect minor delays due to the narrowed lanes and increased monitoring by Florida Highway Patrol.

Additionally, the I-10 widening project near the I-95 interchange continues to affect traffic patterns. While active paving is paused for the holiday, barriers and lane shifts remain in place near the Roosevelt Boulevard exits. Localized construction also remains active on Duval Street and Independent Drive, with various closures between Lee Street and Johnson Street. Given the chilly sunshine and holiday crowds, motorists are urged to maintain a safe following distance and stay alert for pedestrians in the urban core.
