Jacksonville Traffic and Commute Update: Wednesday, February 4, 2026

Jacksonville commuters are facing a challenging morning as a combination of extreme cold weather and ongoing infrastructure projects impact both road and rail travel. Residents are advised to allow for extra travel time and to prioritize safety during these freezing conditions. The following is a detailed breakdown of current alerts and roadworks across the First Coast.

Major Arteries and Lane Closures

Construction activity remains high across Duval County’s major highways. Commuters utilizing the Northside and Westside corridors should be aware of the following specific disruptions:

  • US-17 / N Main Street: As of late Tuesday evening and continuing into this morning, lane-blocking construction is reported on US-17 near Yellow Bluff Road. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution when merging and to watch for flaggers in the work zone.
  • Interstate 95 Southbound: The ramp to Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway (MM 354) is currently blocked due to active construction. This closure is part of the ongoing interchange improvement project aimed at increasing safety and operational efficiency. Drivers should utilize 8th Street or other alternative exits to reach the urban core.
  • Interstate 10 Widening: The massive five-year project to widen I-10 between I-295 and I-95 is reaching its final phases. While most work is performed at night, localized lane shifts and narrow lanes continue to impact flow near McDuff Avenue and Stockton Street.
  • Sandalwood Area: Emergency crews have been working to clear a serious multi-vehicle accident on Alden Road reported late yesterday. While lanes are reopening, residual debris and police presence may cause slow-downs in the neighborhood this morning.

Public Transportation: JTA Service Alerts

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has issued critical service updates due to the persistent cold front gripping the region. The Skyway remains temporarily suspended after several nights of below-freezing temperatures. JTA is currently operating a bus bridge to transport passengers between Skyway stations until the system can be safely re-evaluated for operations.

In better news for transit riders, the new $1 fare pilot program is officially in effect as of February 1. Passengers on all fixed bus routes will only pay $1 per ride, and connection paratransit fares have also been reduced to $1. Additionally, the Nav’i autonomous shuttles operating along Bay Street are now providing free service to downtown travelers as part of this initiative.

Weather-Related Precautions

With wind chills significantly impacting road conditions and vehicle performance, the City of Jacksonville has activated warming centers, including the Legends Center on Soutel Drive. JTA is offering free transportation to these shelters for those in need. Drivers are reminded to check tire pressure and battery levels, as the extreme cold can lead to an increase in disabled vehicles, further complicating the morning rush.
