New Southside gathering space adds an off-leash component to a larger food-and-entertainment concept

Jacksonville officials and project representatives marked the opening of Community First Bark Park this week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at The Block Jax, a new outdoor dining and entertainment complex on Gate Parkway on the city’s Southside. The dog-park opening is part of The Block Jax’s broader launch, with the venue scheduled to open Friday, March 20, 2026, and hold opening-weekend activities through March 22.

The Block Jax is planned as a multi-amenity destination that combines food service, programmed events and recreation in a single campus. Public project descriptions indicate the site is designed around an outdoor food-hall format with multiple vendors, shared seating and a central gathering area that can support community events and live entertainment.

What is opening, and what it includes

Community First Bark Park is the on-site dog-park element of the development, branded through a sponsorship arrangement. The park is tied to Kanine Social, a private, membership-oriented dog-park concept that has operated elsewhere in Jacksonville and has been preparing a Gate Parkway location as part of The Block Jax development. In project materials, the dog-park component is presented as a dedicated area for off-leash activity alongside other family-oriented features planned for the property.

The overall venue concept centers on being pet-friendly while also providing amenities for families. Plans for the campus have consistently included a children’s play area and an event stage, positioning the site for a mix of daytime recreation and scheduled programming.

  • On-site craft beverage component described as a brewery
  • Kids play area
  • Event space with a stage for performances and community activities

Location and development timeline

The Block Jax is located on Gate Parkway near Village Crossing Drive, in the Southside/Deerwood area, a short distance north of IKEA. The project has been in planning and development since at least 2023, when local business filings and real-estate reporting began describing the concept as a 2.5-acre campus that would pair food vendors with recreation uses, including a dog-park operation.

Early projections had pointed to an opening in 2024, but subsequent updates described a later launch window as construction progressed. The venue’s announced opening weekend is March 20–22, 2026, with Friday, March 20, as the start of operations.

Why it matters for the Southside

The Block Jax adds a new type of consolidated, outdoor-oriented gathering place to a part of Jacksonville that has seen continued residential and commercial growth. By combining food service, events and designated recreation areas—particularly a managed dog-park component—the development reflects a broader trend in local destination retail toward experiences and programming rather than traditional indoor-only formats.

The venue’s first weekend of operations is planned to serve as a public introduction to the campus, with the dog-park opening positioned as one of its marquee features.
