Jacksonville Government Convenes for Key Committees and Downtown Development Votes

Today, Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Jacksonville's City Hall is the site of a packed schedule of political activity. From high-level fiscal oversight to the approval of major skyline-altering developments, city officials and committee members are tackling a series of agenda items that will define the city's trajectory for the remainder of the year.

City Council Committee Marathon

The legislative day began at 9:30 a.m. with the Transportation, Energy & Utilities Committee meeting in the Council Chambers. This committee is responsible for overseeing the city's infrastructure and utility services, including the Jacksonville Transportation Authority and JEA. Following this morning session, the Special Committee on Duval DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) is scheduled to meet at 11:00 a.m. This special committee is tasked with reviewing government operations to identify efficiencies and streamline municipal services, as directed by the Council President.

The afternoon remains busy with the Finance Committee convening at 1:00 p.m. As the primary body for reviewing appropriations and the city budget, the Finance Committee's decisions today will impact how taxpayer dollars are allocated for local projects. Later this evening, the Land Use & Zoning (LUZ) Committee will hold its agenda meeting at 4:30 p.m., followed by a formal 5:00 p.m. session to vote on property rezonings and urban planning initiatives that affect neighborhoods across the city.

Downtown Investment Authority and the Southbank Skyline

Outside of the Council Chambers, the Downtown Investment Authority (DIA) is meeting this afternoon to weigh in on pivotal redevelopment projects. A primary focus of today's meeting is the proposed $110 million hotel planned by Baptist Health for its Southbank campus. The 15-story project, which includes 226 rooms at the corner of Palm Avenue and Gary Street, is seen as a major step in revitalizing the Southbank. While Baptist Health would own the hotel, the board is evaluating the incentives and planning requirements necessary for the project to move forward.

Additionally, the DIA is expected to discuss the future of the riverfront, including the potential demolition of the closed Museum of Science and History (MOSH) building. The removal of this structure is considered a key phase in clearing the path for new park space and riverfront access as the museum prepares for its eventual move to the Northbank.

Public Participation

Aside from legislative sessions, the city is also hosting a Pre-Retirement Seminar for municipal employees in the morning. All formal committee meetings taking place at City Hall are open to the public, providing residents an opportunity to witness the debates and votes that govern Jacksonville's growth and fiscal health.
